Perfume When Travelling: Everything You Need to Know

Perfume enthusiasts know the dilemma: you want to take your favourite fragrances with you when travelling without risking bottles or violating flight regulations. In this guide you will learn everything important about perfume when travelling – from flight rules and hotel care to the right miniature strategy.

Flight regulations for perfume

The 100 ml rule for hand luggage

Under EU regulations, liquids in containers of up to 100 ml are permitted in hand luggage. All liquid containers must be stowed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag (max. 1 litre total volume).

What is allowed?

• Perfume samples up to 100 ml: In the plastic bag
• Roll-on perfumes: Also under 100 ml
• Sample sets: Individual vials count separately
• Attars: Treated as liquids
• Checked luggage: Unlimited up to 1 litre per container (depending on the airline)

What can cause problems?

• Bottles over 100 ml (in hand luggage)
• Perfumes in containers that are not clearly labelled
• Suspicious-looking miniatures (they are often confiscated)
• Fragrance oils without clear labelling

Duty-free purchases on the plane

The rule

Perfumes from duty-free may be taken on board over 100 ml in the sealed STEB bag (Security Tamper Evident Bag). The bag must not be opened until the final destination.

Caution with connections

On international connections (especially outside the EU), duty-free perfumes in the STEB bag can still be confiscated. Rules are particularly strict in transit through the USA, UK or Australia.

Choosing the travel miniature

For perfume enthusiasts, small, robust travel decants are ideal:

• Glass bottles with spray head: 5–10 ml, with screw cap
• Roll-on bottles: 5–10 ml, leak-proof
• Atomiser miniatures: Empty mini spray bottles for filling yourself
• Sample vials: 1–3 ml, ideal for daily use

Important: material quality

Cheap plastic miniatures can react with high-quality perfumes. Extrait de Parfum ideally belongs in glass.

Decanting: the right technique

From spray to miniature

1. Remove the spray head of the original bottle (if possible)
2. Carefully fill the miniature using a small funnel
3. Alternative: spray directly into the travel atomiser
4. Minimise air between the original and the atmosphere
5. Close tightly immediately

Hygiene

• Clean new miniatures with alcohol before use
• Rinse thoroughly when reusing
• Use separate funnels for different fragrances (avoid cross-contamination)

The hotel room strategy

Storage in the hotel

Perfumes should be stored properly in the hotel too:

• Not in the bathroom: Temperature changes, humidity
• In the wardrobe: Dark, usually climate-stable
• Not in the safe: Often overheated (electronics)
• Not by the window: UV light does damage

Hotel minibar trick

The minibar is often the coolest, darkest storage in the hotel room. Some enthusiasts use it for valuable perfumes when travelling to hot countries.

Change of climate

In hot countries: dose more lightly. German winter fragrances often feel oppressive in Dubai or Thailand. Choose travel perfumes that suit the destination.

Business travel

• Prefer subtle fragrances
• Don't spray on flights (consideration for fellow passengers)
• Apply fresh after arriving at the hotel
• A moderate dose before important meetings

Leisure travel

• Be more adventurous
• Try local fragrances in the destination country

Dubai and the Gulf states

Here you can be generous. Perfume culture is strong, questions about fragrance are welcome. Visit the souks and try local specialities. Bring along: Pure oud oils for layering.

USA

American TSA rules are stricter. Extrait de Parfum in hand luggage: only under 100 ml, in the bag. Everything else goes in checked luggage.

Tropics

Heat and humidity change perfumes. Choose lighter fragrances, musk compositions or attars instead of heavy ouds.

Arctic climate

Cold dampens scent development. Heavy ouds and warm gourmands shine here. A trip to Scandinavia in winter: ideal for Assam oud.
