Interesting facts about sandalwood
Sandalwood oil is an essential oil obtained through steam distillation. It is primarily cultivated in East India. Due to its rarity, sandalwood, along with agarwood (oud), is among the most precious woods in the world.
Depending on quality and origin, 1 kg of wood can cost up to $2,000 US dollars.
Sandalwood oil has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes, in the science of Ayurveda, or in the perfume industry.
Its slightly yellowish, viscous consistency, along with the balsamic-sweet, velvety warm wood note, is characteristic of this oil.
There are various qualities; mainly, a distinction is made between two main groups: white and red sandalwood.
Red sandalwood is mainly grown in South America and is of lower quality than white sandalwood. Unfortunately, many blends or other subspecies of the Santalum tree are offered on the market as pure sandalwood from India.
The best quality comes from India and is unrivaled in its olfactory properties.
Storage and refining
The general rule here is: the older, the better. Similar to some wines, sandalwood also matures over time when stored properly.
Quality
The offered quality “Sandal-wood Grade AAA+” is a pure natural oil from Mysore, obtained through steam distillation.
and is mainly used in the perfume industry.
Sandalwood oil has an oily consistency with a slightly yellowish, typical color and lasts quite a long time on the skin.
According to the manufacturer, this batch was distilled in 2021.
Genuine Mysore quality wines are extremely rare on the market, as exports from the region of India are strictly limited and meticulously monitored by the Indian state.
In 9 out of 10 cases, it says Mysore on the label, but none of them are actually inside.
Connoisseurs can immediately distinguish whether it is truly the incomparable elixir of happiness or not!
One indication is the high price compared to other varieties from Hawaii or Australia.
Mysore sandalwood oil is and remains simply the Ferrari among all other sandalwood species on this planet.
Anyone who has studied Santalum distillates but has never had the opportunity to "sip" this holy grail will immediately notice a striking difference from anything they have previously known.
This masterpiece of the senses is worth every penny and is practically priceless!
Fragrance notes
Unlike many other qualities of its "counterparts," this oil has a very soft, almost creamy note with a hint of vanilla, buttery, typical accords... and that's exactly how it starts!
The "fragrance progression" is rather consistent; later the accords transition to a somewhat softer level and impress from start to finish with balsamic, velvety-soft, slightly sweet and woody, balsamic nuances.
“A dream,” as Claire Vukcevic wrote in her article about our Mysore sandalwood on basonets.com in the article “the murky matter of Musk”.
