Buying Oud: The Most Important Tips for Beginners

Oud is the most expensive liquid raw material in the world – and at the same time the most frequently faked. Anyone wanting to buy real oud in Germany or Europe is moving in a market shaped by marketing terms, synthetic molecules and questionable origin. This guide shows what you really need to look out for.

Real or synthetic oud? The decisive difference

Over 95% of all fragrances marketed as "oud" worldwide contain not a single drop of real agarwood oil. Instead, synthetic molecules such as Oud Synthetic (Firmenich) or Oud Assafi are used. These substances imitate individual facets of real oud but never reach its complexity, depth or development on the skin.

Real oud – distilled from the infected heartwood of Aquilaria trees – has an unmistakable profile: honeyed, animalic, smoky, resinous, with a living personality that changes over hours. Synthetic oud remains static, often scratchy and one-dimensional.

The four great origins

Cambodia (Crassna)

Sweet, fruity, balsamic. The most approachable oud, ideal for beginners. Cambodian oud is often associated with honey and caramel notes. Our Royal Thai Trat and related editions show the Thai-Cambodian school.

Thailand

Light, citrusy, resinous. Thai oud from the provinces of Trat, Prachinburi and Nakhon Ratchasima is brighter and more elegant than other origins. Perfect as a daytime oud or as a first entry into pure oud oils.

Assam (India)

Dark, deep, animalic. "Hindi oud" is considered the reference in the Arab world. Honeyed, leathery, with a strong barnyard note. Not for beginners, but the benchmark for connoisseurs.

Borneo and Indonesia

Green-resinous, meditative, clear. Borneo oud often has camphor-like facets and feels more "spiritual" than the warm Southeast Asian varieties. Has become rare, as wild stocks are strictly regulated.

Quality markers: how to recognise real oud

  • Price: Pure oud oil under €50 per gram is practically guaranteed to be diluted or synthetic. Real quality starts at €100–200/g, premium from €500/g.
  • Origin statement: Reputable suppliers name the specific province, ideally harvest and distillation year.
  • Development: Real oud changes radically over 8–12 hours. Synthetic seems frozen.
  • Honesty: A reputable dealer tells you if a fragrance contains only 2% oud. Woolly "pure oud perfume" promises for €49 are warning signs.

Where to buy real oud in Germany?

Real oud, explained honestly

How do I recognise real oud?

Real oud develops over hours, is deep, complex and slightly animalic. Synthetic oud accords smell flat, unchanging and fade quickly. And real oud has its price: the raw material is among the most expensive in the world.

What does real oud perfume cost?

Because distilled agarwood oil is extremely expensive, serious oud extraits usually range between 100 and 300 euros per flacon. Significantly cheaper "oud" perfumes almost always work with synthetic accords.

Is real oud legal and sustainable?

Yes, if it comes from cultivated Aquilaria plantations. The Aquilaria tree is CITES-regulated; responsible houses source their oud from sustainable cultivation rather than wild stocks.

What is the difference between real and synthetic oud?

Real oud is distilled from the resin of the agarwood tree and smells warm, woody, deep and alive. Synthetic oud is a lab-built accord: uniform, often sharper and without the development of the natural raw material.
