Extrait de Parfum – What XDP Really Means
Extrait de Parfum, XDP or Parfum for short, is the highest concentration level in perfumery. While eau de toilette works with 5–10% fragrance oil and eau de parfum with 15–20%, a real extrait de parfum contains 25 to 40% pure fragrance oils. The result: more depth, more longevity, more character – but also more cost.
What is extrait de parfum?
The term comes from French perfumery and denotes the highest level of fragrance concentration. Historically "parfum" or "extrait" was what women in the 19th century dabbed from crystal flacons – highly concentrated fragrance oils, diluted in alcohol, with incredible longevity.
In the modern perfumery standard, extrait de parfum is defined by:
- 25–40% fragrance-oil share (perfumer compositions)
- 60–75% alcohol as carrier
- Minimal water or completely water-free
The oil share varies by house and philosophy. Duftkumpels typically works with 30–35% concentration, often with additional pure natural-oil shares (oud, ambergris, deer musk) that intensify the depth once more.

Longevity & Sillage – the real difference
The jump in concentration from EDP to XDP is not linear – it is quadratic. Why?
- More base notes: Extrait works with a higher share of heavy base molecules (oud, musk, sandalwood, labdanum). These cling longer and develop over many hours.
- Less alcohol: Less solvent means slower evaporation. The scent stays present longer because it does not "go up in the air" as fast.
- Oil interplay: High-quality oils such as real oud or ambergris are fixatives themselves – they hold other notes on the skin.
In practice: a good eau de parfum lasts 6–8 hours, a real extrait de parfum 10–16 hours. On clothing often 2–3 days.
Production & ingredients
The production of an extrait de parfum differs fundamentally from industrial EDTs:
- Hand-blended in small batches: No mass production; every bottle is part of a limited series.
- Maceration: After composition the perfume matures for 4–12 weeks so the oils bond harmoniously.
- Natural raw materials in abundance: Where mainstream perfumes use synthetic molecules, extrait works with real rose oil, real oud, real ambergris.
- No perfume fillers: No artificial fixatives, no diluents, no colourants.
Applying it correctly
- Less is more: 1–3 sprays are enough. Extrait is so concentrated that overdosing quickly becomes intrusive.
- Pulse points: Wrist, neck, behind the ears – where the skin is warm.
- Skin, not clothing: The warmth of the skin lets the base notes emerge. On clothing these are missing.
- Do not rub: Spray on, let it dry. Rubbing destroys the top notes.
- Layering: Purists layer extrait with pure oils (oud, musk) for personal signatures.
Why XDP costs more – and why it is worth it
A 30 ml extrait de parfum often costs more than a 100 ml EDP from other houses. Here is the arithmetic reality:
- 30 ml XDP with 35% oil = 10.5 ml pure fragrance oils
- 100 ml EDP with 15% oil = 15 ml pure fragrance oils – but mostly synthetic
The decisive point is not the volume of the bottle but the quality and origin of the fragrance oils. One gram of real oud costs more than a litre of synthetic musk aroma. Extrait de parfum with real natural raw materials is often cheaper than mainstream EDPs when compared per gram of oil – but higher in quality per application.
