L’Animale Aurum

Some fragrances are composed.

Others come into being because nature preserves its most precious treasures over decades for a single moment.

L’Animale Aurum – The Golden Animal undoubtedly belongs to the second category.

Its story did not begin with a perfume.

It began more than ten years ago with an attar.

Back then, AttarG came into possession of an extraordinary musk granulate from the musk pod of a Himalayan gazelle, sourced from a small trader in Pakistan near the Indian border. Even in its original form, this rare natural material revealed a fascinating character: powdery elegance, fine leather nuances, delicate chocolate facets and a warm, almost hypnotic animalic quality.

Fascinated by this extraordinary raw material, AttarG composed an attar whose centrepiece was precisely this musk granulate. Even then, this creation seemed to know its destiny. It did not feel like a finished work, but rather like the beginning of a journey – as if it were patiently waiting for those precious raw materials that would one day make it what it was always meant to be.

For more than a decade, this attar remained almost unchanged.

Not for lack of ideas.

But because extraordinary raw materials need their time.

Only when the labdanum from Crete from the year 2002, decades-matured patchouli, precious Mysore sandalwood, rare Thai oud and further treasures of nature finally joined it could the original attar become the composition that today bears the name L’Animale Aurum.

Great fragrances are not made overnight.

They grow with the years.

While other compositions are made from new raw materials, L’Animale Aurum was completed piece by piece over more than a decade.

At its centre stands a true treasure of classical perfumery:

Labdanum from the Greek island of Crete – harvested in 2002.

This extraordinary resin comes from a time when cistus resin was still obtained in the traditional way. Goats roamed the sun-drenched cistus fields of Crete before the precious resin was then carefully combed from their coats, cleaned and processed further. The result is a labdanum of incomparable depth, warmth and elegance.

This raw material did not reach AttarG through ordinary trade channels.

It comes from the private collection of an experienced perfumer who, over decades, personally gathered the rarest essences in their countries of origin. Thousands of kilometres led her around the globe. Countless permits, certificates and official requirements had to be fulfilled to bring these treasures legally to Germany.

When she decided to pass on part of her collection, she entrusted it to AttarG – not for business reasons, but out of friendship and the conviction that these raw materials should live on in the right hands.

Without her passion, her decades of collecting and her trust, L’Animale Aurum would never have come into being.

Around this extraordinary labdanum, further treasures of nature finally gathered: creamy sandalwood (Santalum album) from Mysore in India, decades-matured patchouli from Indonesia, vanilla absolute from India, cocoa absolute from Madagascar, tonka absolute from the Comoros, an in-house castoreum tincture from 2018, gazelle musk in a sandalwood tincture from 2022 as well as fine agarwood oil from the Thai province of Trat – a region whose ouds are prized for their exceptionally sweet and floral facets.

No raw material tries to outshine the other.

Each one serves a single purpose:

To create a harmony greater than the sum of its parts.

Originally, the precious labdanum from 2002 was intended for a tiny solitaire collection.

Just a few flacons.

A one-of-a-kind work of art.

But the quantity available was so small that this dream could never become reality.

Years later, a long-standing Duftkumpels Close Friends couple from southern Germany expressed a heartfelt wish:

They wanted one day to experience the original attar as a completed perfume.

This wish became the decisive impulse.

AttarG took his attar, matured over years, his in-house tinctures and the extraordinary vintage raw materials from his collection, and began to bring them together into an Extrait de Parfum.

Not according to a fixed plan.

But guided by the raw materials themselves.

L’Animale Aurum was not created anew.

It is the completion of an attar that waited more than a decade to become whole.

With the very first spray, an exceptionally dense gourmand aura unfolds.

Soft cocoa meets powdery elegance, dry chocolate facets and supple vanilla. Mature leather merges with warm amber resins into a composition that feels at once soothing, luxurious and incredibly sensual.

Little by little, the gazelle musk comes forward.

Not loud.

Not dominant.

But gentle, elegant and with a natural animalic quality that fills the entire fragrance with an almost magnetic radiance.

Creamy Mysore sandalwood envelops every single facet and finally leads the fragrance to its true centre:

Here L’Animale Aurum shows its full beauty.

Golden resins, decades-matured patchouli, fine castoreum nuances and floral Thai oud merge into a composition whose development can hardly be put into words.

A fine veil of powder almost seems to lie over everything.

Like fairy dust.

Like freshly washed skin.

Like luxurious sun cream on warm summer skin.

Like the scent of a person who has just come in from the sun.

Everything feels perfectly interwoven.

Dense.

Soft.

Soothing.

And yet full of character.

A fragrance that does not want to impress.

But to touch.

L’Animale Aurum was completed on 30 June.

This makes this creation – measured against its decades-old raw materials – still a young fragrance.

Natural essences continue to develop over the years.

They become rounder, more harmonious and reveal ever new facets.

Every flacon will go its own way.

Therein lies the beauty of genuine natural perfumery.

Of L’Animale Aurum, only 150 ml in total could be produced.

Not because artificial scarcity is part of our philosophy.

But because the Almighty has set the limits through nature.

Almost all the main components of this creation come from matured raw materials or ones that are scarcely available today. Once they are used up, the story of this fragrance ends too.

At the time of its release, L’Animale Aurum will initially be accessible exclusively to our Duftkumpels Close Friends. Not as a marketing strategy, but as an expression of our gratitude towards the people who have accompanied our journey for years, share our philosophy and appreciate extraordinary natural perfumery as much as we do.

Whether and when this creation will later be made accessible to a wider circle is decided solely by the remaining quantity of these unique raw materials – for that too is ultimately decided by the Almighty through nature.
