Shipping Perfume Safely: What You Need to Know
Anyone who has ever sent a valuable niche perfume by post knows the uneasy feeling: will the bottle arrive intact? Which rules apply to alcohol in a parcel? In this guide we clarify everything about shipping perfume safely – so that your fragrance reaches the recipient undamaged.
Why shipping perfume is special
Perfume contains ethanol and is therefore classified as dangerous goods of class 3 (flammable liquid). This does not mean that shipping is prohibited – but special regulations apply. In Germany, the ADR (Accord europeen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses) governs the conditions. For private individuals and online retailers this means in concrete terms: a maximum of 1 litre of perfume per parcel, no letter post, and clear labelling as dangerous goods. The right packaging
Solid packaging is essential. Wrap the bottle in at least two layers of bubble wrap. Use a sturdy cardboard box that provides at least 5 cm of padding all around. Special dangerous goods shipping boxes with integrated padding are ideal. For particularly valuable pieces such as Al Hayvaan Extrait de Parfum the effort pays off twice over. Make sure the bottle cannot move inside the box. Filling material such as packing paper or biodegradable packing chips is ideal.
Checklist for safe shipping
Check before sealing: bottle firmly closed? Double-wrapped in film? Box sufficiently padded? Dangerous goods label present? Recipient address correct and clearly legible? If you observe all of these points, you are on the safe side.
Which carriers accept perfume?
With its "dangerous goods in limited quantities" service, DHL offers a way to ship perfume domestically. Hermes also allows shipping under certain conditions. DPD and GLS have their own rules – check in advance. Internationally it gets more complicated: many countries have their own import regulations for products containing alcohol. Deutsche Post generally excludes shipping perfume as letter post.
Special notes for retailers
As a commercial shipper, you are obliged to train your staff in handling dangerous goods. Annual instruction according to chapter 1.3 ADR is mandatory. Tips for international shipping
Within the EU, uniform dangerous goods rules apply, which simplifies shipping. For Switzerland, the United Kingdom or third countries, customs regulations and sometimes alcohol import restrictions apply. Always declare the contents correctly on the customs declaration.
