Musk in Perfumery – From Animalic to Synthetic
What is musk?
Musk is the mother of all perfume base notes. It gives fragrances warmth, a skin-like quality and longevity. But "musk" is not always "musk" – the range stretches from genuine deer musk to synthetic Galaxolide.
The musk family
Genuine deer musk
The original. Warm, animalic, skin-like. Obtained from the musk pod of the musk deer. Extremely rare and regulated. AttarG sources his deer musk personally from the Himalayas – one of the rarest raw materials in the range, often available only in a few millilitres. Al Hayvaan XDP at Duftkumpels contains genuine deer musk.
White musk (synthetic)
Galaxolide, Habanolide, muscone derivatives. Clean, soapy, airy. Found in a great many modern perfumes. Inexpensive, but one-dimensional.
Plant-based musk
Ambrette seeds (Abelmoschus moschatus). The only plant-based alternative with a genuine musk character. More expensive than synthetics, but vegan.
