Musk is one of the oldest and most fascinating fragrance raw materials in human history. Its warm, animalic, skin-close scent is present as a base note in almost every modern perfume – often without you knowing it. Yet behind the word musk lies a complex world of nature, chemistry, ethics and culture.
What is natural musk?
Natural musk (deer musk) is obtained from the musk secretion of the male musk deer. The secretion is produced in a gland (the musk pod) on the animal's abdomen and serves in nature for marking territory and attracting mates. In its dried state, musk has a complex, animalic scent with leathery, woody and slightly sweet facets. Ambrette musk
Ambrette seeds (Abelmoschus moschatus) offer a plant-based alternative with an astonishingly musk-like profile. This natural plant musk is ethically unproblematic and valued in niche perfumery.
Synthetic musk
Most modern perfumes use synthetic musk: white musk (clean, laundry-like), Galaxolide (creamy, powdery), Habanolide (warm, animalic). These molecules replace the natural raw material in mass-market fragrances but do not reach its complexity and depth.
Musk in history
For centuries musk was one of the most coveted and expensive raw materials in the world. In ancient China and Tibet it was valued as medicine and aphrodisiac. The Silk Road was at the same time a musk route – the raw material was so valuable that it was accepted as currency. In the Islamic world musk is regarded as the noblest of all scents, mentioned in numerous hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad.
Ethics and sustainability
Obtaining natural deer musk is ethically complex. Traditionally the animal had to be killed to remove the musk pod. Today there are methods of obtaining musk without killing, and breeding programmes are increasingly used.
