Wood: the most important fragrance family

Woody notes are the backbone of perfumery. They form the base, give structure and longevity. But "woody" is not a single smell – the range from creamy sandalwood to dark oud is as wide as from Pinot Noir to Cabernet.

The great woody notes

Oud (agarwood)

"Liquid gold". Complex, animalic, honey-like. Our oud collection shows the full spectrum.

Sandalwood

Indian Santalum album from Mysore: creamy, milky, warm. The most expensive commercial wood in the world after oud.

Vetiver

Earthy, smoky, green. From the roots of a grass species. The base of many chypre and fougère fragrances.

Cedarwood

Dry, pencil-like, warm. Virginia cedar, Atlas cedar and Texas cedar each have their own profiles.

Guaiac wood

Smoky-sweet, vanilla-like. Often used in combination with vetiver and oud.

What is the difference between oud and sandalwood?+

Oud is dark, animalic, complex. Sandalwood is creamy, milky, warm. Both are woody notes, but fundamentally different in character.

Are there vegan woody fragrances?+

Yes – sandalwood, vetiver and cedarwood are all plant-based. Only oud has a slightly animalic note due to the fungal infection.
