Limited Editions at Duftkumpels

Every Duftkumpels flacon is part of a limited edition. No re-runs, no industrial scaling, no unlimited batches. This decision is not a marketing strategy – it is a natural consequence of the way we work and the raw materials we use. Here we explain why small batches are the only honest way.

Why limited at all?

The answer lies in the raw materials themselves. When we prepare a batch of Tonkin Sunset XDP , we use a specific oud distillate from a specific batch of a particular distillery in Thailand. This distillate has its own character – determined by the harvest year, the local weather, the Aquilaria tree it was obtained from, and the signature of the distiller.

Once this batch is used up, we cannot repeat it identically. The next delivery from the same supplier will smell different. Not a mistake – but the nature of natural raw materials. Every grape harvest tastes different. Every olive harvest too. And every oud distillate.

We could mask this variability by topping up with synthetics and "standardising" every batch to the point of interchangeability. That is what designer houses do. We do not.

The size of our batches

Typical editions are:

• Core collection: 80–100 flacons per batch, 2–3 batches per year
• Seasonal editions: 30–60 flacons, one-off
• Special releases: 20–40 flacons, one-off, often with a special raw material
• Bespoke: 1 flacon, never reproduced

For comparison: an average designer fragrance is produced in batches of 10,000 to 1,000,000 flacons. We operate a factor of 1,000 smaller. That is not a weakness – it is the reason our fragrances can have a density and individuality that would be industrially impossible.

Hand-numbering – the small detail with a big effect

Every flacon carries its individual number within the batch. "27/80" means: you are holding the twenty-seventh flacon of an edition of eighty. This number is written by hand in fine ink on the label – not printed, not lasered.

Why this effort? Because hand-numbering is the opposite of mass-produced goods. Because someone in the Hamburg atelier held this flacon individually in their hands, checked it and labelled it. You do not get a piece off the conveyor belt – you get a crafted piece.

Collector value and secondary market

In fact, a lively secondary market has established itself for some of our sold-out editions. Certain batches – especially early editions with raw materials no longer available – are traded among collectors at prices that are several times the original sale price.

We view this with mixed feelings. On the one hand it is a confirmation of quality and artistic value. On the other hand we actively do NOT encourage speculation – our fragrances are made to be worn, not hoarded. Anyone looking for a sold-out edition should be aware that the next batch generation is often at least as good, sometimes even better.

What "not re-produced" means in practice

Some of our fragrances are re-released at regular intervals – with the same formula but new raw-material batches. Others are truly one-off: once the last flacon is sold, the edition is over forever.

We always communicate this transparently: every product page states whether the fragrance belongs to the core collection or is a one-time edition. If in doubt, we are happy to advise via our fragrance consultation.
